I got asked this on formspring and my answer was too long (aka long winded) so i figured i'd just put it down here..
Q. What's the best way to spend a rainy weekend?
A. In Japan, soaking up the mid-autumn smells of passing rain, strolling along the pavement outlining the city, and glancing at the occasional kindergarteners clad in yellow raincoats, then spending a few seconds looking up at the sky through your transparent umbrella, watching the drizzle pat against the plastic. Stopping outside a convenience store you've accidentally come across, and entering the warm room with the shop assistant's chirpy welcome along with the familiar jingle of bells. You pick up a can of coffee and a magazine, but you put it back down in the rack knowing that you wouldn't get it home dry. You wouldn't understand half of it, anyway. Night falls early and you get your way up to Tokyo Tower while the sky is still full of pinks and purples. Staring down at the glimmering city, watching insignificant beings doing so much but actually nothing. Admiring the sunset view of Japan's skyline and feeling small. Worthless. Crushing the can of coffee and deciding to go to the kissaten nearby the place you rented once you've noticed that the rain has thinned. Ordering the most local dish, slurping the udon as the steam warms your face while listening to floating lines of conversations by the businessmen beside you. Then maybe just returning to your cold, sparse room, realizing how empty your life can actually be when in a city full of people brimming with vigor. And finally you think to yourself, 'Being empty helps taking in everything the world's got to offer.' as a way to perhaps comfort the gaping wound in your heart. And the rain returns, at a steadily relentless rate, almost as if promising you that you would wake up tomorrow to a grey and wet city once again.
Well, what the fuck am I talking?
